Morneau accepted a position Monday as a special assistant in the Twins front office, effectively ending his playing career, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

The 36-year-old Morneau had been hopeful to keep his career going during the 2017 season, but was unable to find an opportunity. He'll now officially hang up his cleats after 14 MLB seasons with the Twins, Pirates, Rockies and White Sox and retire with a lifetime .281/.348/.481 batting line and 247 home runs. It's no surprise that he'll choose to remain around the game as a member of the Twins organization, with whom he spent his first 11 seasons, highlighted by an AL MVP-winning campaign in 2006.

The Twins are showing interest in signing free-agent Justin Morneau.

Morneau spent ten seasons as a member of the Twins from 2003-2013, and it seems as though Minnesota are interested in bringing Morneau back into the fold. The 35-year-old has been solid over the past two seasons despite not playing a ton of games, as he hit .310 in 182 plate appearances in 2015 and .261 in 218 at-bats in 2016. At any rate, he would be a nice platoon player for the Twins if they do land his signature.

There is no reason for Morneau to play if he is not 100 percent. Morneau is batting .256 with five home runs for the White Sox this season and will look to return over the weekend.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura said Justin Morneau felt a twinge in his neck, which is why he's out of the lineup on Tuesday.
