Michael Cuddyer announced his retirement from professional baseball on Friday.

Cuddyer ended his career on a bit of an odd note, leaving one year and about $12.5 million on the table in his contract, and having his retirement announced quite unceremoniously through the team's official transactions webpage. The 36-year old spent the better part of his 15 seasons with the Twins, before going to Colorado for three years and reviving his career, winning the batting title 2013. His 2015 with the Mets was cut to 117 games with a disappointing .259/.309/.391/.699 slash line. Cuddyer made three All-Star Games in his career. This is a good break for the Mets, as they now have an extra $12.5 million in payroll for free agency, and Cuddyer wasn't expected to be a significant contributor to the club.

Cuddyer should still be considered day-to-day. He is batting .327 with two home runs over the last 14 days and the Mets sure would like to get him back into the action.
