Pagan says he will sit out the entire 2017 season to spend time with family, Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors reports.
The veteran outfielder says he has already turned down multiple minor-league contract offers and simply wants to spend a year outside baseball. Pagan had reached a deal with the Orioles this spring before a failed physical sunk the proposition, but did compete for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic. Although not officially retired, it will be a long road back for the 35-year-old if he does decide to return to the game.
Toronto, San Francisco, San Diego, Atlanta and Detroit have all expressed interest in signing Pagan and he's expected to make a decision in the next 48 hours, Jim Bowden of ESPN reports.
It was odd that Pagan was unsigned this winter after he hit a career-high 12 homers while slashing .277/.331/.418 last year. He reportedly failed a physical when close to signing a contract with Baltimore earlier this spring, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports. However, Pagan hit .303 (8-for-31) in seven games for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic to seemingly put to rest any fears over his health. He could land with a team that will give him steady playing time.
Pagan went 2-for-4 in Wednesday's World Baseball Classic championship game loss to Team USA. He hit .303 (8-for-31) in seven games for Puerto Rico.
Pagan remains a free agent but showed he's worthy of a big league job in the WBC and also showed he's healthy. Pagan was close to signing with Baltimore earlier this spring before failing a physical, Jon Heyman of Fanrag Sports reports. Atlanta was reportedly interested in signing Pagan before the WBC started, so it may not be long until he signs with a MLB team.
Pagan will play for Puerto Rico in the World Baseball Classic, but remains a free agent as MLB spring training begins.
It's odd that Pagan hasn't signed with a new team yet, especially since he hit a career-high 12 homers while slashing .277/.331/.418 last season. He'll get to showcase his skills in the WBC.
