Black signed with the New Jersey Jackals of the independent Can-Am League on Wednesday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
Black owns a 2.96 ERA in 51.2 major-league innings but last pitched in the big leagues in 2015. He has battled shoulder injuries since then and struggled to a 5.25 ERA in 36 innings in the Giants' minor-league system last year.
Black signed a minor league contract with the Giants on Friday, Rich MacLeod of MLB.com reports.
Black hasn't pitched in the majors since 2014 and is coming off of shoulder surgery, but Giants scouts saw him throwing 97 MPH in workouts and decided their former reliever was worth a flyer. The Giants bullpen has been ineffective thus far (4.89 ERA), and anybody who brings that kind of heat is enticing for a club in that situation.
Vic Black had a minor setback in his rehab with a groin injury.
With his ERA at 15.43 and his BB/9 at 7.7, it takes the air out of Vic Black's 11.6 K/9 rate at Triple-A for the Mets. His control is struggling and now he has a groin injury that will delay his rehab as he works his way back to a depleted New York bullpen that needs every live arm it can get. Monitor his health going forward but Black is a middle reliever at best for the Mets.
Vic Black was returned from his rehab assignment. He has been reinstated from the 15-Day disabled list and optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas.
Black is the classic reliever with a big arm who has no idea where the ball is going. With Bobby Parnell back soon and Jenrry Mejia coming back next month, there is little chance of Black having a meaningful role with the Mets until after the trade deadline.
