It was Johnson's first appearance in affiliated ball in two seasons after he was sidelined for all of 2017 while recovering from October 2016 Tommy John surgery. The right-hander was formerly a well-regarded starting pitching prospect in the White Sox organization and made 22 career starts in the big leagues, but it appears the Padres will transition him to a bullpen role coming off the major arm injury.

Johnson was a top 100 prospect for a short time, but he has since lost his ability to find the strike zone or strike out batters, and has turned into a journeyman starter. However, the Padres appear to be trying to trot out the worst opening day rotation in the history of baseball, so even Johnson, who posted an 8.33 ERA across 31.1 MLB innings last season, has a chance to crack the rotation. Avoid at all costs.

Johnson is coming off of a disappointing 2016 season and he will miss the entire 2017 season due to Tommy John surgery, so it makes sense that the Padres would choose to move on from him. The 26-year-old is 7-10 in his career with a 6.65 ERA but it wouldn't be a total surprise if someone signs him as a low-risk potential bullpen arm once he's healthy.

The surgery was performed by none other than Dr. James Andrews and will cost him the entire 2017 season. His time with the Padres, following coming over in the James Shields trade, was not great as he posted a 9.15 ERA in four starts. There is no reason to look at him in drafts in 2017.
