Justin Verlander was once again denied a victory thanks to a bullpen implosion on Tuesday, holding the Cubs to three runs on five hits over his five frames.

The 42-year-old hurler walked two batters while punching out three on the evening. Most of the damage done against him came on a two-run blast by Miguel Amaya in the third inning, while the Cubs tacked on another on an RBI infield single by Jon Berti in the fifth. Verlander exited with a 5-3 lead and once again in line for a victory, and for the third time recently the Giants’ bullpen was unable to hang on for him — this time a blown save by Ryan Walker in the ninth. He got nine whiffs on 82 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 29 percent. He’ll bring a 4.50 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 35/15 K/BB ratio (42 innings) into Monday’s matchup against the Diamondbacks.

The 42-year-old hurler walked one and struck out four in the ballgame. He allowed an RBI single to Brenton Doyle in the third inning and then served up a solo homer to Ryan McMahon before exiting in the seventh. He exited with a 3-2 lead and in line for his first victory of the season once again, but the Giants’ bullpen couldn’t hang on for him. He got 11 swings and misses on 85 pitches on the night — six on his fastball — while posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll bring a 4.38 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and a 32/13 K/BB ratio (37 innings) into Tuesday’s battle against the Cubs in Chicago.

Justin Verlander pitched well in a tough-luck no-decision on Sunday afternoon, limiting the Angels to just one run on two hits over six strong innings.

The 42-year-old right-hander struck out six batters on the afternoon while issuing a pair of walks. The only blemish on his day came on a first-pitch solo home run by Zach Neto to open the fifth inning. He also got into trouble in the fourth inning as the Angels loaded the bases with a double and a pair of walks, but Verlander struck out Logan O’Hoppe to end the threat. He should have earned his first victory of the season, but Ryan Walker blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning that cost Verlander dearly. He got 12 swings and misses on 98 pitches in the game — nine of them on his fastball which averaged 94.8 mph and touched as high as 97.4 mph — while posting a CSW of 27 percent. He still sits at 0-1 on the season with a 5.47 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 23/11 K/BB ratio over 24 2/3 innings through his first five starts. He’ll look to replicate this fine performance when he takes on the Rangers at home on Friday.
