Jairo Díaz has signed with the Gastonia Honey Hunters of the independent Atlantic League.
Díaz signed a minor league contract with the Mariners back in April, but never wound up appearing in a minor league game for the organization. Mariners signed RHP Jairo Diaz to a minor league contract.
Diaz held a free agent showcase in Miami on Monday and apparently caught the eye of the Mariners. The 30-year-old right-hander did not appear in the majors in 2021. He owns a career 4.86 ERA.
Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that free agent right-hander Jairo Díaz held a showcase Monday in Miami for more than a dozen teams.
No word on the specific teams in attendance, but Díaz should garner some interest this season as additional major-league bullpen depth. The 30-year-old righty holds a serviceable 4.86 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 108/47 K/BB ratio across 107 1/3 innings (110 appearances) in the big leagues since 2014.
Jairo Diaz will hold a free agent showcase for teams on Monday in Miami.
Diaz did not make an appearance in the majors last season and struggled to a 7.65 ERA over 20 innings with the Rockies in 2020. But the hard-throwing 30-year-old right-hander does have past experience working as a high-leverage reliever and should be able to find a minor league deal somewhere.
