He's one of 11 new names on the ballot, which also includes (in alphabetical order) A.J. Burnett, Michael Cuddyer, Dan Haren, LaTroy Hawkins, Tim Hudson, Torii Hunter, Aramis Ramírez, Nick Swisher, Shane Victorino and Barry Zito. A number of these players had very good careers, but there's not a no-doubter in the bunch, which should make for an interesting year in terms of voting. Curt Schilling (who received 70 percent of the vote last year) would appear in strong position to make it in his ninth year on the ballot. Roger Clemens (61.0 percent), Barry Bonds (60.7 percent) and Omar Vizquel (52.6 percent) were the only others to receive votes on at least 50 percent of ballots last year. Players must be on 75 percent of ballots to earn their place in Cooperstown.

Mark Buehrle could still find a job in the Major Leagues, if he wants one but that's the big question, does he want one. We could hear a retirement announcement anytime in the coming weeks or months. We could also hear him signing a veteran deal with a squad late in the season to provide rotational depth. Buehrle posted a 3.81 ERA over 32 starts for the Blue Jays in 2015. He will turn 37 before the season begins.

Buehrle is a fine back of the rotation starter who provides innings without a ton of upside. His 16-year career looks to be over if the Cards do not decide to hire him on for another season.

This is a shocking twist that one of the game's most durable and consistent starters will be left off the postseason roster. While Buehrle was not admittedly outstanding this year, it was expected he would be able to contribute during the playoffs with the experience he owns.
