2025 Player Outlook
Darvish experienced a decline in strikeout rate for a fourth consecutive season, but he still continues to get solid results. He was able to post a 3.31 ERA, but an uncharacteristically low .245 BABIP may have helped him achieve those results. Durability is also becoming a concern as he enters his age-38 season. Darvish made just 16 starts last season after making 24 starts in 2023.

MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell reports that the Padres are “hopeful” that Yu Darvish (elbow) will “rejoin the staff at some point in May.”
The 38-year-old has been out since mid-March with elbow inflammation, and there has been little word on his recovery other than some videos of him throwing in the outfield before a game last week. Cassavell reports that Darvish’s “ramp-up has been a slow, steady progression, as he hadn’t fully built up in Spring Training when he was sidelined,” but he has started mixing in more breaking balls into his bullpens and “could progress to facing hitters at some point in the near future.” There are still a lot of unknowns here, but a return in the next month seems possible for the right-hander.

The 38-year-old veteran doesn’t have a clear return timetable yet, but he should progress to throwing bullpen sessions and facing hitters in the near future, which would put him on track to return at some point before the end of May, if not sooner.
