Jerez, 29, made 12 appearances with the Pirates and Giants back in 2019. He owns a 5.33 ERA, 1.82 WHIP and 24/17 K/BB ratio across 25 1/3 innings (29 appearances) at the major-league level since 2018. He'll serve as organizational relief depth for the Mariners.

Jerez's 4.34 ERA in 10.1 major-league innings for the Giants and Pirates last season looks decent enough, but it came with a 2.03 WHIP and a 9:9 K:BB. He doesn't look like much than an up-and-down reliever heading into his age-28 season.

Jerez was designated for assignment Wednesday.

The Pirates needed to clear some 40-man roster spots for players they wanted to protect from the Rule 5 draft, and Jerez is a casualty. He had a 4.35 ERA and 2.03 WHIP in 10.1 innings last year.
