A big spring surprise for the Guardians, Wilson has kept it going in April, hitting .346/.446/.636 in 15 games for Columbus. It could eventually earn the former first-round pick a look, but Daniel Schneeman is doing fine in a utility role at the moment. Maybe if the team sends down the struggling Brayan Rocchio for a spell.

Wilson’s homer off Kris Bubic checked in at 110.4 mph and 444 feet, and he has had a 99.1-mph single and a 105.9-mph groundout against Michael Lorenzen. Wilson’s claim to fame to date is that he’s the first-round pick the Angels tossed aside to get the Giants to take Zack Cozart’s contract after the 2019 season. In five years in the Giants system, he hit just .232/.311/.385, and the Guardians picked him up as a minor league free agent over the winter. Little was expected to come of the addition, but maybe the Guardians have unlocked something here. He’s still almost certainly bound for the minors to start the season.

Wilson was the Angels' first-round selection in the 2019 MLB Draft before being jettisoned to the Giants as the player to be named later in the Zack Cozart trade back last offseason. The 22-year-old infielder is slated to open the year in the minor leagues, but he could be a candidate for a late-season promotion if he excels this summer.
