Reds released 1B/OF Wil Myers.

Myers was designated for assignment by the Reds earlier this week and will now be eligible to join a new team at the major league minimum. The Reds had high hopes when they signed the 32-year-old to a one-year, $7.5 million deal this offseason, but he hit just .189 with three homers over 37 games and the team ended up having better internal options at their disposal. He's had some bad luck with injuries this year too, so surely another team will scoop him up in hopes of a return to form.

There simply isn't a spot for Myers with Cincinnati anymore with veteran first baseman Joey Votto back from last year's shoulder surgery and several young corner outfielders fighting for everyday at-bats moving forward. The 32-year-old signed a one-year, $7.5 million contract with the Reds last offseason and was hitting just .189 (24-for-127) with three homers, 12 RBI and two stolen bases in 37 games this year.

Myers landed on the injured list back in late May with kidney stones, but a left should sprain seems to be the more pressing concern at the moment. The 32-year-old outfielder should only need a handful of rehab games before returning to Cincinnati sometime next week.

Myers is now fully recovered from the kidney stones that landed him on the injured list, but will be out a while longer while battling the shoulder sprain. As of now, thereâ??s no clear timetable for his return.
