Trey Wingenter has signed with the Seibu Lions of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball.
Wingenter will take his talents overseas after being non-tendered a couple weeks ago by the Cubs. The hard-throwing 30-year-old righty reliever has made 97 appearances in the big leagues dating back to 2018.

Wingenter is booted from the roster to make room for Matt Thaiss, with Thaiss coming over in a trade with the Angels. The 6-foot-7 right-hander should see interest on the waiver wire as a depth arm.

Wingenter pitched scoreless innings the last two days, so he just has to be sent down for a fresh arm, even though none of the Cubs’ top four relievers worked at all Saturday or Sunday.
