Trevor Oaks fired three scoreless innings on Monday in a Cactus League start against an Indians’ split-squad.
Oaks scattered three hits and also finished with three strikeouts. He was removed from the Giants’ 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Sacramento during the offseason, so he isn’t a candidate for their Opening Day roster. However, he represents valuable organizational depth and could be back in the majors at some point this year. The 26-year-old righty made four appearances (two starts) for the Royals back in 2018. He didn’t appear in the big leagues last season.
Oaks cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Kerry Crowley of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
A player who missed all of 2019 due to a hip injury and who has just 13.2 big-league innings under his belt understandably wasn't a hot commodity on the waiver wire. Oaks isn't likely to play a significant role for the Giants this season.
Oaks was designated for assignment by the Giants on Thursday, Amy Gutierrez of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Oaks will be removed from the Giants' 40-man roster after being claimed by the team in November. The right-hander made his major-league debut with the Royals in 2018, posting a 7.24 ERA and 1.98 WHIP over 13.2 innings before missing the entire 2019 campaign with a hip injury. The 26-year-old was able to pitch in the Arizona Fall League and should be ready for the start of spring training.
The Giants claimed Oaks off waivers from the Royals on Tuesday.
Oaks was designated for assignment by the Royals on Oct. 29 after missing all of 2019 with a hip injury, and he'll now report to San Francisco heading into 2020. The 26-year-old has been effective at Triple-A, recording a 3.23 ERA over 128.1 innings in 2018, but he struggled in his only major-league action, amassing a 7.24 ERA with a 10:6 K:BB in four appearances (two starts).
