Blue Jays signed RHP Spencer Turnbull to a one-year contract.
The move was reported on Saturday and is now official. Turnbull will be optioned to the complex league in order to build up his pitch mix and get ready to push for a starting rotation spot. Max Scherzer was transferred to the 60-day IL to make room on the 40-man roster.
Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith reports the Blue Jays and Spencer Turnbull are in agreement on a one-year contract.
It’s a major-league deal for Turnbull, which is pending a physical. The 32-year-old righty operated in a versatile swingman-type role last year for the Phillies, recording a strong 2.65 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 58/20 K/BB ratio over 54 1/3 innings (17 appearances, seven starts) prior to suffering a season-ending lat strain in late June. He’ll provide the Blue Jays with a much-needed back-end rotation stabilizer.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports that free agent right-hander Spencer Turnbull is throwing for interested teams in the hopes of securing a big league deal.
The 32-year-old hurler did a nice job when healthy for the Phillies in 2024, registering a 2.65 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and a 58/20 K/BB ratio over 54 1/3 innings. With all of the pitching injuries around the league, you’d think there would be at least a few teams giving Turnbull a look to see what he has. Even if he does sign though, it will likely take him at least a few weeks to ramp up and eventually join a starting rotation.
Phillies manager Rob Thompson told NBC Sports Philadelphia that RHP Spencer Turnbull still has work to do before he’s ready to return this season.
The Phillies hope to get Turnbull into a minor league game by the end of this week. If Turnbull returns to the major leagues this year, it’ll be as a reliever. Thompson didn’t indicate that a return is imminent. Turnbull would have a better chance at returning to a major league mound if the Phillies advance to the second round of the playoffs.
