Free agency versus a minor league assignment? I'd choose free agency too. But it is a risk for Santos as he won't be able to pitch till mid-season this coming year after Tommy John surgery in June and his lackluster performances the past couple of years.

The Dodgers had DFA'd Santos and the Yankees signed him to a minor league deal. He pitched for a very short time in the minors before getting a call-up and now he's already hurt again and in need of surgery. The Yankees are probably kicking themselves for bringing this on themselves and there's no telling how an already mediocre Santos will come out of it.

It's another injury in the long line of DL stints in Santos' career. There's no timetable for his return.
