Sandy Alcantara allowed four runs in 5 2/3 innings and took the loss against the White Sox on Sunday.

Alcantara gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out eight. Despite taking his fifth loss in a row, it was a solid outing for Alcantara, who got burned by allowing a three-run home run to Tim Elko. The 29-year-old right-hander’s 8.10 ERA this season is the stuff of nightmares, but his 4.50 xFIP leads us to believe it’s not over for the former Cy Young award winner. Alcantara just has to pitch well enough for a contender to trade for him before the deadline. Alcantara is set to face the Rays at home next weekend. Hard to trust someone who can’t even pitch his way past the 2025 White Sox, but if you believe in the underlying stats, Alcantara will turn it around any start now.

10 of the Dodgers’ 17 balls in play against Alcantara were hit hard, including Shohei Ohtani’s 117.9-mph homer. It’s the third time in four starts that Alcantara has allowed at least five runs. He’s lost four in a row, leaving him 2-4 with an 8.42 ERA. At least he gets the White Sox next.

Alcantara’s struggles to start the season continued on Tuesday against the Dodgers. Shothei Ohtani took his first pitch out for a solo homer in the bottom of the first inning. Los Angeles added two more runs on the board before Alcantara got out of the opening frame. They’d add four more runs before he was pulled with two outs in the third. The 29-year-old right-hander ends the day with an 8.31 ERA, 1.65 WHIP, and a 19/17 K/BB ratio across 26 innings.

Alcantara got his first quality start of the year, but it was the bare minimum. He allowed five hits, walked two and struck out four. The former Cy Young winner has a 6.56 ERA and a 17/12 K/BB through 23 1/3 innings over five starts, and he’ll have to take on the Dodgers next.
