McMahon had a seven-game hitting streak going when he arrived in San Diego, but he just went 0-for-11 versus the Padres, leaving him at .236/.295/.382 through 15 games. He’s fanned in 20 of his 61 plate appearances. One can’t help but think about what kind of return the Rockies might have gotten for him last summer and how much less trade value he has now.

After striking out in his first at-bat against Logan Gilbert, McMahon smacked a one-out double off of Casey Lawrence in the fourth and scored the game’s first run on an RBI knock by Nick Martini. He also singled off of Carlos Vargas in the sixth inning before giving way to a pinch runner. McMahon is off to a nice start this spring, hitting .333 (5-for-15) with a pair of runs scored, though he’s still looking for his first RBI.

McMahon was an All-Star this year, and no one is going to understand why a few years from now. He’ll end up with a 93 or 94 OPS+ this year after coming in at 98, 98 and 95 the previous three years. He hit 20 homers, putting him at 20-23 for the fourth straight year. McMahon is still good enough defensively that he’s an asset as a regular, but none of his little offensive breakthroughs have ever held up. It’s quite possible that he’d take a step forward with another team, but the Rockies missed out on their best chance to get value for him at this year’s trade deadline.
