Given a chance to close, Ryan Borucki blew a three-run lead in the ninth Sunday against the Yankees.
The Pirates played matchups today, using Dennis Santana against the top of the Yankees order in the eighth. He retired Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge consecutively. Borucki, though, let the Pirates down by giving up three hits and a walk to the six batters he faced. The Pirates did go on to win in extra innings, but that this worked out so poorly for them is probably good news for those who picked up Santana.

Borucki has been officially added to Pittsburgh’s Opening Day roster. The 30-year-old lefty will operate in middle relief.

The Pirates will need to add Borucki to the 40-man roster in order for him to join the Opening Day group. The southpaw will likely be a middle-inning option for Pittsburgh while he’s with the club.

The New York Post’s Jon Heyman adds that Borucki will earn $1.15 million plus incentives if he makes the majors. The 30-year-old lefty missed most of last year due to triceps inflammation. He’s made 148 appearances (21 starts) in the big leagues dating back to 2018. He’ll augment Pittsburgh’s organizational relief depth heading into next season.
