Dodgers released RHP Rubby De La Rosa.

De La Rosa was in camp with the Dodgers this spring after signing a minor league contract in February, but was unable to land a spot on their season-opening roster. The 33-year-old righty reliever will head back to the open market in search of a new opportunity. He spent the last four years pitching overseas in Japan and hasn't appeared in the majors since the 2017 campaign.

He's back. De La Rosa has spent the last four years pitching for the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. The 33-year-old right-hander, who was a highly-regarded pitching prospect last decade with the Dodgers before being traded to the Red Sox, last appeared in the majors during the 2017 campaign with the Diamondbacks. He holds a serviceable 4.49 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 356/157 K/BB ratio across 421 1/3 innings (98 appearances, 70 starts) since 2011. He'll compete this spring for a spot on the Dodgers' season-opening roster in a relief role.

De La Rosa is back on the mound for the first time in 18 months after recovering from Tommy John surgery. He'll need more time to get up to speed in the minors, as he allowed three runs in 3.2 innings of spring work.

The Diamondbacks feel De La Rosa may be best served starting the season at Triple-A Reno, Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reports.

De La Rosa is pitching again after missing 18 months due to Tommy John elbow surgery -- the second time he's undergone that procedure. He's had a pair of scoreless outings this spring, including one in an appearance against the Reds on Monday, when he flashed a high-90s fastball while striking out the side. By having De La Rosa start at Reno, the organization can easily limit the length and frequency of his appearances. Once the right-hander is eased into the season, De La Rosa can rejoin the Diamondbacks bullpen, where he's shown flashes as a dominant late-inning weapon.
