Herrera joined the Yankees as a non-roster invitee Monday.
Herrera has appeared in 149 career big-league games, spending time with the Reds, Royals and Marlins. He hasn't found much success at the plate, hitting .225/.286/.316 with three homers. His ability to play both middle infield spots and center field theoretically helps him toward earning a bench role, but his bat appears to be too weak for that to happen on a contending team.
Herrera cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans on Saturday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports.
Herrera's .200/.288/.314 slash line understandably didn't stir up a ton of interest on the waiver wire. He'll remain as organizational depth for the Marlins.
Herrera was designated for assignment by the Marlins on Wednesday, Craig Mish of FNTSY reports.
The Marlins need to clear a roster spot for the addition of Zac Gallen, who will have his contract purchased ahead of his scheduled start Thursday against the Cardinals. Herrera didn't stake a particularly firm claim to a roster spot, hitting just .200/.288/.314 in 63 games, recording the exact same .602 OPS that he recorded in his debut season.
Herrera went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Friday's 5-2 loss to the Padres.
For the second time this week, Herrera entered the game as a pinch hitter and went yard, this time stepping to the plate for Caleb Smith in the sixth inning and spoiling a potential shutout bid for San Diego pitcher Joey Lucchesi. Those are his only two homers of the year, however, and Herrera's .222/.293/.344 slash line will likely keep him in a bench role.
