Orioles signed LHP/1B Ronald Guzmán to a minor league contract.
Guzmán began his career as a left-handed hitting first baseman, playing 246 career games with the Rangers and Yankees. However, when his production seemed to stall out, he began working as a pitcher and turned himself into a two-way player in the minor leagues in 2023. However, he also suffered a forearm strain which impacted his ability to pitch in 2023. The 29-year-old will now continue his development in Baltimore’s organization.

The Giants experimented with Guzmán as an intriguing potential two-way player during spring training, but the 28-year-old left-hander suffered a pronator strain in his left forearm that eliminated any chance of making their season-opening roster. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets another shot in a different organization as a two-way project.

Guzmán got into three games this season for the Yankees, going 0-for-6 with five strikeouts at the dish. The 27-year-old former top prospect batted a respectable .255/.344/.478 with 16 home runs across 373 plate appearances in 105 games this season for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He should be able to latch on somewhere this offseason as extra organizational corner infield depth.

Guzmán went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment over the weekend and will remain with the Yankees as organizational infield depth. The 27-year-old first baseman went 0-for-6 with five strikeouts in three games last week with New York.
