Phillippe Aumont, who was in camp with the Blue Jays this spring, has retired in order to become a farmer.

An unusual end to an unusual career. Aumont was made the 11th overall pick in the 2007 draft by the Mariners, only to almost immediately get turned into a reliever. He was shipped off to Philly in the Cliff Lee deal in 2009, and he made 46 appearances for the Phillies from 2012-15, going 1-6 with a 6.80 ERA. After getting off to a tough start for the White Sox's Triple-A club in 2016, he retired for the first time, but he returned in 2018. He didn't impress then, but he was much better in indy ball last year and he looked like he had a real shot of seeing time with the Jays this year. He's still just 31 and he was throwing hard last year, so one wonders if he'll have another change of heart at some point.

The Canadian owns a 6.80 ERA and a 15.6 percent walk rate in 43.2 major-league innings, none of which have come since 2015. He's spent two of the last three years with the Ottawa Champions of the independent Canadian-American Association, posting a 2.65 ERA in 18 starts this past season.

Aumont was once a good enough prospect to have been drafted 11th overall and to headline a Cliff Lee trade, but his control never developed. He recorded a 6.80 ERA with a 15.6 percent walk rate over 43.2 innings with the Phillies from 2012 to 2015 and has been out of the big leagues since. He spent 2018 in the Tigers' system, recording a 6.23 ERA in the high minors. The Canadian will return for a second stint with Ottawa after starting 17 games there with a 4.51 ERA in 2017.

Aumont agreed to a minor-league contract with the Tigers on Monday, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.

Aumont, who was once a top prospect for the Mariners and then the Phillies, is looking to return to the majors after pitching in Canada last season (4.51 ERA and 103:30 K:BB across 17 starts). He was never able to put it together at the highest level, posting a 6.80 ERA and 1.99 WHIP over 43.2 innings with the Phillies. The soon-to-be 29-year-old will likely serve as organizational pitching depth next season.
