2024 Player Outlook
2023 Recap: Avila posted a 3.22 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 58.8 percent ground ball rate across 14 appearances (6 GS) for the Padres last year. Avila was far, far, far better as a reliever, posting a 1.46 ERA in that role, compared to a 4.91 ERA and 1.68 WHIP as a starter. His above-average ground ball rate helps him avoid home runs, and he showed reverse splits on the mound in 2023. His sinker and four-seamer were largely ineffective against right-handed hitters, likely because he struggled to get these pitches on the inner-third, though his non-fastball offerings were quite good.
2024 Outlook: Avila will open the year in the team's rotation, but he's off the fantasy radar heading into 2024, and I wouldn't be surprised if by season's end, he's pitching in a long relief role.
