Cubs optioned OF Owen Caissie to Triple-A Iowa.
Not a surprise. Caissie not only has been dealing with a groin injury, but the 22-year-old was a longshot — at best — of making the Opening Day roster regardless. The 2020 second-round pick could help the Cubs and fantasy manager at some point this season, however, because of his tremendous power from the lefts ide.
Cubs’ skipper Craig Counsell said Thursday that Owen Caissie has been shut down due to tightness in his left groin.
The 22-year-old is already recovering from core muscle surgery that he underwent over the off-season, so this setback will delay him even further. Caissie was always an extreme longshot to crack the Cubs’ Opening Day roster, but now it’s a near certainty that he’ll open the season in the minor leagues.
Cubs selected the contract of OF Owen Caissie from Triple-A Iowa.
Caissie boasts a sweet left-handed swing and was arguably the most notable prospect for fantasy purposes that needed to be shielded from next month’s Rule 5 Draft. The 22-year-old outfielder doesn’t possess elite over-the-fence pop, but he projects as a five-category fantasy contributor capable of pitching in across the board. He figures to be knocking on the door of the big leagues after finishing last season with a robust .278/.375/.473 triple-slash line with 19 homers and 11 steals in 549 plate appearances at hitter-friendly Triple-A Iowa.
Cubs OF prospect Owen Caissie launched two homers on Friday for Triple-A Iowa.
Caissie drilled a grand slam and also added an additional solo shot to record his sixth career multi-homer performance. The -year-old outfielder pairs strong plate skills with a smooth left-handed swing, which should enable him to hit for both average and power at the highest level. He holds a strong .275/.375/.478 triple-slash line with 17 homers and nine steals across 114 games this season for Triple-A Iowa.
