Cubs optioned RHP Nick Neidert and LHP's Eric Stout and Bailey Horn to minor league camp.
Neidert and Stout were in camp this spring as non-roster invitees and figure to get a shot at some point this upcoming season. The pair will head to Triple-A Iowa as organizational relief depth to open the regular season. The latest batch of cuts trims the Cubs' camp roster to 51 players.
Nick Neidert pitched well in Friday's Cactus League start against the White Sox, allowing only one run on three hits over 2 2/3 innings.
The right-hander struck out one in the ballgame and didn't issue a base on balls. The only blemish on his day came in the second inning as Eloy Jimenez doubled and came around to score on a ground out off the bat of Romy Gonzalez. The 26-year-old hurler has had a rough go of it this spring, registering a 6.23 ERA and 1.85 WHIP over five innings.
Cubs signed RHP Nick Neidert to a minor league contract.
Neidert was non-tendered by the Marlins last month and finds a new home with the Cubs. According to Robert Murray of FanSided, the deal includes opt-outs on June 1 and July 1, if he's not in the majors. The 26-year-old right-hander spent the majority of last season at Triple-A Jacksonville and wound up making one start for Miami on July 30. He'll provide Chicago with some organizational pitching depth this season.
Marlins non-tendered RHP Nick Neidert.
He had been designated for assignment earlier this week. Neidert has a very good idea what he's doing on the mound, but the stuff probably isn't there to make him a major league starter. A fresh start overseas might be in the cards here.
