Phillies released RHP Michael Ynoa.
Ynoa was in camp on a minor-league deal and failed to secure a spot in the Phillies' Opening Day bullpen. The 29-year-old righty spent the 2020 campaign in the Athletics organization, but didn't appear in the big leagues. He owns a 4.42 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 53/39 K/BB ratio over 59 career innings at the major-league level.
Phillies signed RHP Michael Ynoa to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
The 29-year-old hurler spent the 2020 campaign in the Athletics organization, but did not appear in a big league game. Ynoa hasn't pitched in the major leagues since 2017 and owns a 4.42 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 53/39 K/BB ratio over 59 career innings at the game's highest level. He'll add bullpen depth for the Phillies.
Ynoa agreed to a minor-league contract with the Athletics on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Ynoa memorably received a $4.25 million signing bonus from the Athletics as a teenager in 2008, but the right-hander never quite lived up the big expectations that came with his contract. He never advanced beyond the High-A level during his six years in Oakland's organization and went on to make only 45 appearances at the big-league level with the White Sox before he was out of affiliated ball entirely by the middle of last season. The Athletics were at least intrigued by his work in the Dominican Winter League this offseason -- Ynoa posted a 2.70 ERA and 28:12 K:BB across 16.2 innings -- so he'll receive another look from the organization, likely serving as bullpen depth in the high minors.
Ynoa was released by the Royals on Tuesday, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports.
Ynoa made a solid case for a bullpen role in spring training but ultimately didn't make the Opening Day roster. The 27-year-old struggled at Triple-A Omaha with a 4.57 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 26:14 K:BB over 21.2 innings, leading to his release.
