Reed cleared waivers and elected free agency Friday but was immediately re-signed by the Giants on a minor-league deal, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Reed was cast off the roster to make room for Kevin Pillar after going 0-for-8 with six strikeouts in four games. He'll remain with the organization in a depth role but won't necessarily be the first in line when an opening clears up in the big-league outfield as he's no longer on the 40-man roster.
Reed was designated for assignment by the Giants on Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports.
He was removed from the 40-man roster to make room for Kevin Pillar, who was acquired in a trade with the Blue Jays on Tuesday. Reed had gotten into four games for the Giants so far this season, going hitless with six strikeouts in eight plate appearances.
Reed is not in the lineup Monday against the Dodgers, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports.
Reed is on the bench for a third straight game, suggesting he may have fallen behind the likes of Connor Joe and Gerardo Parra -- who are both starting Monday -- on the outfield depth chart thanks to his ugly start to the season (0-for-7 with five strikeouts through three games).
Reed is not in the lineup Saturday against San Diego.
Reed started both of the Giants' first two games after being acquired in a trade with Minnesota just five days before Opening Day. Gerardo Parra slides over to right field in his absence, with Connor Joe starting in left field.
