Mauricio Dubón went 2-for-2 with a walk on Tuesday to raise his spring average to .143.
He’s 3-for-21 through nine games. Dubón is probably the Astros’ preferred choice to start at second base with Jose Altuve moving to left, but it’d make sense to give Brendan Rodgers a shot first. It seems abundantly clear what Dubón can do at this point; his versatility and ability to hit lefties make him a solid part-timer, but he’s come in at just .252/.284/.352 lifetime against righties.
The Athletic’s Chandler Rome mentioned that the Astros see Mauricio Dubón “as the most logical candidate to play a more prominent role” with Jose Altuve getting time in the outfield this season.
With Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker gone, the Astros are going to be shifting things around, which will mean added time for Jose Altuve in the outfield. When Altuve is in the outfield, the Astros will need to find somebody else to play second base, and Dubón appears to be the leading candidate. As Rome pointed out, two seasons ago, Dubón opened the season as Houston’s everyday second baseman after Altuve broke his thumb in the World Baseball Classic and slashed .309/.333/.389 in Altuve’s absence while also winning. the American League’s utility Gold Glove Award. He won’t provide much power or high-end stolen base upside for fantasy but Dubón has multi-position eligibility and should play a lot for Houston this season.
Astros and INF-OF Mauricio Dubón avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5 million contract.
Dubón gets a $1.5 million raise after hitting .269/.296/.361 in 428 plate appearances last season. It’d be better if he plays less this year, but that could hinge on what upgrades are still to come for the Astros outfield. Dubón will have one more year of arbitration in 2026 before he’s slated for free agency.
Mauricio Dubon is undergoing surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left thumb.
Dubon played the final month of the season with the injury. The super-utility player will undergo the operation in Philadelphia. Assuming a normal recovery timeline, Dubon should be ready for the start of the 2025 season with the ability to play all over the field.
