Kemp tagged Andrew Heaney for his solo shot in the second inning, tying the game at 1-1. It would be his only hit in four at-bats on the afternoon. He also struck out twice. For the season, the veteran outfielder is now hitting .252/.325/.456 with six long balls and 21 RBI.

Kemp tied the game in the sixth inning with a two-run shot off of Zack Davies. The former MVP candidate has performed adequately in his limited with the Rockies, and he's hitting .263 with a .792 OPS in 35 games. It'll be curious to see what kind of role Kemp has in 2021, and if that role will be with the Rockies.

If Kemp makes the Marlins' 26-man roster, it will likely be in a reserve capacity, Steven Wine of the Associated Press reports. "Matt is in a great spot," manager Don Mattingly said. "He knows where he's at. That's the key for a guy like Matt, where you're not going to be playing six days a week, and understanding that's the role we're looking for."

Kemp suffered a broken rib in April 2019 and missed the final five months of the season. Entering his age-35 season, he settled for an NRI deal with the Marlins, but believes he can still play, citing the fact he was an All-Star in 2018. The expectation is that Corey Dickerson will start in left field with Jonathan Villar starting in center field. That leaves Garrett Cooper, Lewis Brinson, Matt Joyce, Harold Ramirez, Magneuris Sierra and Kemp to battle it out for playing time in right field.

Kemp (ribs) agreed Wednesday with the Marlins on a minor-league contract that includes an invitation to big-league spring training, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.

In what might be his final attempt to keep his MLB career going, the 35-year-old Kemp will reunite with Don Mattingly, his manager with the Dodgers from 2011 through 2015. After earning a surprise All-Star nod in 2018, Kemp broke camp with the Reds last season but broke his rib in late April and was released soon after. Kemp then landed a minor-league deal with the Mets, playing in only eight games for the organization's Triple-A affiliate before suffering a setback with the ribs and getting released again. Considering Miami's outfielders combined for just 1.2 WAR (29th in the majors) in 2019, the move to the Marlins probably represents one of the best possible landing spots for Kemp.
