Mark Zagunis has signed with the Lancaster Barnstormers of the independent Atlantic League.
Zagunis opted out of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season and didn't play in the 2021 campaign either. The 29-year-old outfielder posted a pedestrian .200/.313/.275 triple-slash line with two steals in 64 plate appearances over 42 games between 2017 and 2019 with the Cubs at the major-league level.
Cubs placed OF Mark Zagunis on the restricted list.
Zagunis has opted out of the 2020 season. The 27-year-old outfielder was doubtful to get much use anyway as a career .200/.313/.273 hitter at the major league level.
The Cubs sent Zagunis outright to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday after he went unclaimed off waivers.
Chicago designated Zagunis for assignment earlier this month to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Ben Zobrist, who was reinstated from the restricted list. The outfielder will stick around with the Cubs as organizational depth after hitting .250 in 30 games at the big-league level in 2019.
Zagunis was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Saturday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports.
Zagunis has only one major-league plate appearance since late May and is being jettisoned from the 40-man roster as Ben Zobrist (personal) makes his return to the club. The 26-year-old had a .250/.325/.333 slash line with three doubles in 30 big-league games this season.
