Athletics released C Manny Piña.
Piña wound up appearing in just four games for Oakland after signing a two-year, $8 million contract last offseason. The 36-year-old backstop has dealt with persistent left wrist issues since undergoing surgery last April. There’s a chance he’s scooped up in the next few weeks, but his omnipresent wrist issues will likely limit his ability to contribute right away somewhere else.
Athletics activated C Manny Piña from the 10-day injured list and designated him for assignment.
The 36-year-old backstop became a 40-man roster casualty amid a plethora of transactions that the Athletics made on Monday. Piña has had just 12 at-bats at the big league level this season — going 3-for-12 with a solo home run. He could attract interest on waivers from a team on the hunt for catching depth.
Athletics placed C Manny Piña on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to July 11, with left wrist soreness.
The 36-year-old backstop sustained the injury during Sunday’s first-half finale against the Red Sox. It’s not immediately clear how long he’ll be sidelined for. Tyler Soderstrom was promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas to take his place on the active roster.
Manny Piña was removed from Sunday’s game against the Red Sox with a left wrist injury.
There’s no clarity on the exact nature of the injury, but Piña has been dealing with ongoing issues surrounding his surgically-repaired left wrist for months at this point. It’s possible he’ll wind up requiring another trip to the injured list. It’s a really tough break for the veteran backstop, who just made his Oakland debut last week.
