Campusano heads back to the minors with superstar Jackson Merrill coming back from the injured list for Tuesday’s game against the Yankees. the 26-year-old backstop went 0-for-6 with four walks in three games over the last few days with the big-league club.

Campusano was a surprise cut at the conclusion of spring training, but he’s back with the Padres with the club set to face a handful of lefty starters in the coming days. The 26-year-old backstop has gone deep six times in 25 games this season at the Triple-A level.

Campusano’s .407/.508/.796 line has him more than 200 points of OPS in front of any other qualified PCL hitter. Of course, it’s the glove, not the bat, that got him sent down in favor of Martín Maldonado at the end of the spring, and the Padres certainly are not looking to shake things up at the moment. Campusano will be ready when needed, though.

The 26-year-old has started the seasong 17-for-43 (.395) with three home runs, nine RBI, and 13 runs scored. He also has a solid 9:7 K:BB ratio in 12 games. Meanwhile, Elias Diaz has gone 7-for-30 at the big league level for the Padres. A change may not be imminent, but Diaz will need to start hitting if he’s going to hold off Campusano for much longer.
