Braves reassigned INFs Leury García, Alejo López and Phillip Evans, and RHPs Grant Holmes and Jake Walsh to minor league camp.
All five were in Braves camp this spring as non-roster invitees with no real shot at making Atlanta’s season-opening roster. García, López and Evans have all spent time in the big leagues, while Holmes and Walsh figure to continue providing extra organizational relief depth back at Triple-A Gwinnett.
Braves signed OF Leury García to a minor league contract.
García latches on with the Braves as extra outfield depth heading into spring training after being released last March by the White Sox. The 32-year-old veteran didn’t play anywhere last season, so it’s difficult to forecast his odds of actually making Atlanta’s roster. He’s played in 701 contests in the majors since 2013.
White Sox released OF Leury GarcÃa.
The White Sox are eating the $11 million left on the final two years of GarcÃa's contract. The 32-year-old struggled at the plate this spring and the club wants to move forward with some of their younger in-house alternatives like Romy Gonzalez.
Leury Garcia is not expected to make the White Sox' Opening Day roster.
Despite the fact that Garcia still has two years and $11 million remaining on his contract with the White Sox, it sounds like Garcia will be beaten out by Hanser Alberto for a reserve infielder gig. The 32-year-old struggled in Cactus League play, hitting just .222 (8-for-36) with a homer, two RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
