Jeeho Yoo of Yonhap News reports that Kwang Hyun Kim has signed a four-year, $12.3 million contract with the SSG Landers of the Korean Baseball Organization.
Daniel Kim reported previously that the left-hander was headed back to his native Korea, and now we have the particulars of the contract. While Kim struggled toward the end of his two-year stint with the Cardinals, he had a successful run overall, posting a 2.97 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 35 appearances (28 starts).
According to independent journalist Daniel Kim, free agent left-hander Kwang-Hyun Kim is close to returning to the Korean Baseball Organization for the 2022 season.
Kim, who was a KBO insider for ESPN previously, adds that the SSG Landers have officially requested a status check on the veteran southpaw, which is standard procedure when signing a player from the major leagues. The KBO has limits on the number of foreign players each club can sign, but those obviously wouldn't apply to the South Korean native, who spent 12 seasons in the KBO from 2007 until 2019. The 33-year-old lefty has recorded a solid 2.97 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 104/51 K/BB ratio across 145 2/3 innings (35 appearances, 28 starts) with the Cardinals over the last two seasons.
Kwang-Hyun Kim allowed three runs on five hits and a walk over three innings Saturday, taking a no-decision vs the Phillies.
Kim was likely held back in his return outing due to ramp-up concerns, which included a 30-pitch opening inning. The Phillies were easily turning on the left-handers inside fastball which averaged just 88.5 miles per hour Saturday, down 1.4 mph from last season. The important thing for the Cardinals is that Kim is back and healthy, even if they have yet to have a pitcher other than Jack Flaherty complete six innings this season. The 32-year-old will look to go deeper into his next start which will be next weekend against the Reds at home.
Cardinals activated LHP Kwang-Hyun Kim from the 10-day injured list.
Kim will make his 2021 regular season debut against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park this afternoon. The 32-year-old left-handed has been sidelined since a back issue cropped up during the late stages of spring training. He's set to rejoin the Cardinals' starting rotation and should be rostered in all fantasy formats.
