Kirby Yates notched his first save of the year with a perfect ninth against the Marlins on Monday.
The Dodgers didn’t think they’d need a closer tonight, but Yoendrys Gomez turned a 7-1 lead into a 7-4 game in the eighth. Tanner Scott took over to get the final two outs of that inning, setting up Yates to pitch the ninth for the second time this season. He blew his previous chance back on Apr. 19. Yates figures to continue to set up for the most part.
Kirby Yates allowed two runs in the ninth inning to take the loss against the Rangers on Saturday.
With Tanner Scott unavailable after pitching in three of the last five days and Blake Treinen on the injured list, Yates got the save chance in the ninth inning with a one-run lead. He gave up a double to Josh Smith before Adolis García took him deep for a walk-off two-run homer.
Kirby Yates took a loss after giving up a run in two-thirds of an inning versus the Rockies on Thursday.
Yates gave up ringing doubles to Brenton Doyle and Ezequiel Tovar before exiting. Fortunately, his velocity was nearly a match for his 2024 numbers. His splitter might not be all of the way there yet, but he’ll figure that out. He appears destined to work in the seventh and eighth innings for the Dodgers initially.
Dodgers signed RHP Kirby Yates to a one-year, $13 million contract.
The two sides came to a tentative agreement last week and finalized the deal on Tuesday. To make the move official, the Dodgers cleared a spot on their 40-man roster by designating Ryan Brasier for assignment. The expectation is that Yates will take over as the team’s closer, but with Tanner Scott and Evan Phillips also in the mix, Dodgers’ skipper Dave Roberts has a plethora of riches at his disposal in the late innings.
