2025 Player Outlook

Ginkel has been a member of the D-backs 'pen for parts of the last six seasons, and a full-time member over the past two campaigns. The results have been mostly solid, with a FIP under 3.00 for three straight seasons. Last season he posted a healthy 26.5 percent strikeout rate and 5.2 percent walk rate, but he only managed to convert 5-of-11 save chances.

Kevin Ginkel will likely open the season on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation.

No word yet on the extent of the injury, but shoulder inflammation is never a great sign. The Diamondbacks have already said they’re going to play matchups with their bullpen at the end of games, so that likely means Justin Martinez will see the vast majority of saves when right-handed hitters are up, with A.J. Puk getting save chances when left-handed hitters are up.

Diamondbacks and RHP Kevin Ginkel avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.425 million contract.

Ginkel seems to have done well for himself in his second season of arbitration, as he was projected by MLBTradeRumors.com to earn $2.3 million via arbitration. The 30-year-old hurler had another strong season out of the D’Backs’ bullpen in 2024, posting a 3.21 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and a 77/15 K/BB ratio over 70 innings of work. Barring any outside additions, he’ll fight with AJ Puk and Justin Martinez for save chances to begin the 2025 season.

Kevin Ginkel struggled in a save chance against the Reds on Wednesday night, giving up a run on two hits and a walk while recording only one out.

Ginkel came on with a two-run lead to protect, but things got interesting in a hurry as Jake Fraley drew a walk, Jeimer Candelario smacked a one-out single and TJ Friedl tacked on an RBI single. That caused manager Torey Lovullo to have a quick hook, getting Joe Mantiply to come out and finish the job. With Paul Sewald back, Ginkel wasn’t going to hold down the closer’s gig any longer, but if he did still have any leash in the role, it may have evaporated on Wednesday.

Kevin Ginkel locked down his fifth save of the season on Sunday, working a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a one-run lead against the Mariners.

Ginkel made it look awfully easy in this one, getting Jorge Polanco on a called third strike, Ty France on a bouncer back to the mound and Mitch Garver on a fly ball to left to end it. He has done a nice job in the absence of closer Paul Sewald, compiling a 3.00 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and a 13/3 K/BB ratio over 12 innings while converting five of his first seven save chances. Sewald suffered a minor setback over the weekend, meaning Ginkel should continue to function in the team’s closer role for at least another week — possibly longer.
