Free-agent RHP Jose Valverde was suspended 80 games, for testing positive for Stanozolol.
It appears as though the 37-year-old is doing anything to get back to the show, as he hasn't been major league relevant for some time now. Expect this to almost completely derail his career going forward, as there are very few teams that will be in the market for a washed up steroid using reliever.
Nationals have granted Jose Valverde his release.
The Nationals did not have any intentions of calling up Valverde from the minors even with his 2.39 ERA and 21/3 K/BB ratio over 26 1/3 innings for Triple-A Syracuse. They agreed to let the 37-year-old test the free agent market and we have no doubt he'll be picked up quickly.
Jon Heyman is reporting the Nationals signed 37-year-old righty Jose Valverde to a minor league deal.
Valverde has been awful over the past two seasons, appearing in 41 games and going 1-2 with a 5.63 ERA. There is little reason to think he has anything left in the tank but given the dominance he once possessed it makes sense clubs keep giving him a chance to prove otherwise.
Jose Valverde has informed the Padres that he will opt out of his Minor League contract.
With Valverde not likely to make the team out of spring training, he will opt out and try to pick up with another team. He could bounce from camp to camp during extended spring training until he finds a sucker....er...new team...to take a chance on him.
