Tim Healey of Newsday reports that the Mets have signed RHP José Ureña to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.
Ureña will join a Mets’ team that is already down Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea due to injury this spring, so a good showing in the Grapefruit League for the right-hander gives him a chance to make appearances for New York this spring. He’s coming off a 2024 season where he made 33 appearances for the Rangers — nine of those starts — with a 3.80 ERA and 70/39 K/BB over 109 innings.
Rangers placed RHP José Ureña on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder fatigue.
Ureña will be out for the rest of the season. The right-hander provided the Rangers with versatility, but didn’t help fantasy managers much. Gerson Garabito is back to provide a multi-inning role for the Rangers. Ureña will be a free agent at the end of the year, and isn’t likely looking at a massive market.
José Ureña allowed six runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday.
Ureña has struggled now in three straight starts after being forced back into the rotation due to injuries. The 32-year-old was thriving in a multi-inning bullpen role in June and July, and the Rangers will likely hope to get him back there soon. As of now, Ureña is slated to start next week against the Pirates, but he’s hard to trust as a starter in any format.
José Ureña gave up two runs over four innings on Wednesday in a loss to the Astros.
Ureña failed to record a strikeout, walked three batters and also coughed up six hits, including a third-inning homer to Yordan Alvarez. The 32-year-old journeyman righty has been a serviceable innings-eater this season for the Rangers, but he’s not a relevant option for fantasy managers, even in deeper mixed leagues. He’s in line to take the ball on Tuesday against the Red Sox at Fenway Park, who lit him up for seven runs last Friday, if Texas decides to give him another turn in the rotation.
