Jimmy Yacabonis has elected free agency.
Yacabonis opted to test the free agent waters rather than accept an outright minor league assignment after going unclaimed on waivers earlier this week. The 31-year-old righty has made seven relief appearances this season in the majors.

The 31-year-old right-hander had been designated for assignment over the weekend, but he passed through waivers unclaimed and will continue to function as extra pitching depth for the Mets at Triple-A.

Yacabonis, who threw 3 1/3 frames on Friday evening on mop-up duty for New York, gets caught up in a roster crunch as the Mets needed to free up a spot on their 40-man roster for Saturday’s starter Denyi Reyes.

He’ll add a fresh arm to an over-worked Mets’ bullpen as Reed Garrett and John Curtiss were optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday. Yacabonis has registered an uninspiring 9.00 ERA, 1.78 WHIP and an 8/4 K/BB ratio across nine innings with the Mets this season.
