Jesús Luzardo limited the Cardinals to one run over seven innings to earn a win in the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader.
Luzardo struck out six and walked two. His team was down 1-0 when he threw his final pitch, but a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh got him the victory. Luzardo improved to 4-0 with a 2.00 ERA. He’s allowed more than two runs just once in nine starts, and it was a mere three runs that time (Apr. 15 against the Giants). He’ll make his next start Monday or Tuesday in Colorado.
Tuesday’s game between the Cardinals and Phillies was rained out and will made up as part of a split-doubleheader Wednesday.
Sonny Gray and Jesús Luzardo were the scheduled starters tonight. They’ll surely pitch tomorrow, probably with Erick Fedde and Aaron Nola also toiling then.
Jesús Luzardo pitched fairly well in a no-decision against the Rays on Thursday night, allowing two runs on six hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work.
The 27-year-old southpaw punched out four batters on the evening while issuing two free passes. All of the damage done against him came from Junior Caminero — who slugged a solo homer in the opening inning and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Luzardo generated 13 swings and misses on 105 pitches on the evening — seven on his sweeper alone — while registering a CSW of 29 percent. He’ll bring a 2.11 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and a 51/13 K/BB ratio (47 innings) into Tuesday’s showdown against the Cardinals.
Jesús Luzardo pitched 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball Friday in a no-decision against the Diamondbacks.
Luzardo left with the Phillies down 2-1, but the offense picked him up to keep him without a loss on the season. His ERA stands at 1.94, and he has a 46/11 K/BB in 41 2/3 innings. He’ll face the Rays next.
