Veteran 1B Jesús Aguilar agreed to a contract with the Seibu Lions in Japan.
Aguilar began the 2023 season as the starting first baseman for the Athletics but was released after hitting just .221/.281/.385 with five home runs and nine RBI in 115 plate appearances. He finished the season in Triple-A with the Braves’ organization but now will leave the United States to keep his professional baseball career alive. At 33-years-old, we may not have seen the last of Aguilar in an MLB uniform.
Braves signed 1B/DH Jesús Aguilar to a minor league contract.
It's a bit unclear what type of role Aguilar would wind up having, if he gets the call to join the Braves at some point later this season, but he'll get a shot at Triple-A Gwinnett to prove there's still some thunder in his bat. The 32-year-old slugger was released earlier this month by the Athletics after compiling a pedestrian .665 OPS with five homers across 36 games.
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, free agent first baseman Jesús Aguilar has agreed to a one-year, $3 million contract with the Athletics.
Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle was the first to report that the two sides were close to an agreement. Aguilar batted .235/.281/.379 with 16 homers and one stolen base across 507 plate appearances last season between the Orioles and Marlins. The 32-year-old veteran slugger gives the Athletics a decent depth option at first base and designated hitter heading into the 2023 season.
Jesús Aguilar doubled, singled and scored a run Wednesday versus the Blue Jays.
Aguilar had the first of back-to-back doubles in the sixth inning, with Kyle Stowers driving him in with a two-bagger of his own. It wound up being the only run the Orioles would score. Aguilar didn't hit much for the O's down the stretch after being scooped up off the scrap heap and he might have to settle for a minor league contract this offseason.
