Werth (hamstring) told Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports that his career has come to an end, officially retiring from professional baseball.
Werth announced his retirement while on the 7-day disabled list with Triple-A Tacoma. He stated to Heyman that he knew his career was over when he walked off the field for the last time against Nashville on June 8. The veteran outfielder had been hitting just .206 with a .686 OPS in 36 games for the Rainiers this season. Over the course of his major-league career, Werth finished with a career slash line of .267/.360/.455 with 229 home runs and 799 RBI across 1,583 games and helped the Phillies win the World Series in 2008.
Werth was moved to the 7-day disabled list Saturday, Mike Curto, the Tacoma Rainiers broadcaster reports.
Werth will head to the disabled list with an undisclosed injury. Through 36 games at Triple-A Tacoma, he's batting .206 with four homers and 19 RBI.
Werth (hamstring) is back in the Triple-A Tacoma lineup Saturday, starting at designated hitter, radio announcer Mike Curto reports.
He missed three games with a sore hamstring and is being eased back in as the DH. The 39-year-old is hitting .193/.260/.386 with four home runs in 24 games with Tacoma.
Werth is unavailable for Wednesday's minor-league matchup due to a hamstring strain, Tacoma Rainiers' broadcaster Mike Curto reports.
Werth has a "very, very mild hamstring strain" according to Triple-A Tacoma's manager, Pat Listach. While he's unavailable for Wednesday's game, he's not expected to miss an extended period of time. Werth is batting just .193 with four home runs and 10 RBI through 24 games at Triple-A.
