Braves signed C James McCann to a minor league contract.
McCann’s arrival provides Atlanta fans with the opportunity to break out those vintage Brian McCann shirseys again. He’ll serve as an emergency catching option behind top prospect Drake Baldwin and backup Chadwick Tromp while Sean Murphy is on the shelf recovering from a rib injury. The 34-year-old veteran backstop slashed .24/.279/.388 with eight homers in 233 plate appearances over 65 games last year for the Orioles in a backup role.
James McCann hit a two-run homer and doubled against the Rockies on Sunday.
The homer off Ty Blach was McCann’s fifth of the year. At .223-5-22 through 200 plate appearances, he’s on pace to almost perfectly match last year’s .222-6-26 line in 226 plate appearances.
James McCann underwent facial surgery on Monday.
McCann technically underwent a nasal reduction realignment procedure after breaking his nose last week during a doubleheader against the Blue Jays. He’s been playing through the issue for the last couple days, but has played sparingly.
James McCann was able to finish the first game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Blue Jays despite taking a pitch to the face in the first inning.
McCann had blood streaming out of his nose for several minutes after being plunked by Yariel Rodríguez, but to the amazement of everyone, he remained in the game and even delivered a single later. After the game, he said that his nose is probably broken and his left eye was swollen. Hopefully, he won’t need to make an appearance in the nightcap.
