May was cut loose by Chicago on Saturday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.
May will look to latch on elsewhere after slashing .255/.303/.341 with two home runs and 30 RBI through 81 games at Triple-A Charlotte.
May was designated for assignment by the White Sox on Thursday.
In order to make room for recently acquired pitcher Miguel Gonzalez, the team cast May off the 40-man roster. The outfielder appeared in 15 games for Chicago in 2017, going 2-for-36 with three RBI and three walks during his first opportunity in the big leagues. May will ready himself for another season at the Triple-A level with Charlotte, assuming he passes through waivers unclaimed.
May has been optioned to Triple-A Charlotte, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The White Sox will wait to announce a corresponding move until Tuesday. May went just 1-for-32 over his 14 games with the White Sox and struck out 15 times. It clearly wasn't going to happen for May at the major league level. Leury Garcia will hold down the center field job for now, but we'll have to see who gets called up before the playing time situation can be sorted out.
May entered Saturday's game as a pinch hitter and delivered his first hit in the major leagues. He went 1-for-2 with a strikeout in a 7-0 loss to Cleveland.
May served as a pinch hitter for Melky Cabrera, who left the game with a wrist injury, and played left field. After opening the season as the team's starting center fielder, May struggled at the plate and has since been sharing the job with Leury Garcia. If Cabrera's injury costs him any time, May will be in line for at-bats but those aren't at-bats fantasy owners want.
