Mayfield went unclaimed on waivers and will remain with the Angels as organizational infield depth. The versatile 31-year-old veteran has gotten into 23 games this season at the big-league level, hitting .186/.230/.271 with one homer and one steal in 74 plate appearances.

The move was made to free up a spot on the 40-man roster for Touki Toussaint who was acquired from the Braves on Sunday. Mayfield has struggled in his time with the Angels this season, hitting just .186/.230/.271 with one homer and one steal in 74 plate appearances. There's a chance he'll pass through waivers unclaimed and continue to serve as infield depth for the Angels at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Mayfield will go down to Triple-A with reliever Kenny Rosenberg taking his spot on the active roster. He's struggled in his time with the Angels, hitting .186/.230/.271 with one homer and one steal across 74 plate appearances. 

He's taking the place of the injured Anthony Rendon on the club's active roster. With Rendon now out for the remainder of the season, there's a chance that Mayfield could stick around for a while. The 31-year-old is hitting just .194/.239/.284 with one homer and six RBI in 22 games with the big league club this season.
