Díaz wound up electing free agency shortly after passing through waivers unclaimed following Detroit’s decision to remove him from their 40-man roster. The 27-year-old middle infielder has gotten into eight games this season in the big leagues and will search for a new opportunity on the open market.

Díaz was officially removed from Detroit’s 40-man roster over the weekend after going unclaimed on waivers. The 27-year-old middle infielder, who was claimed off waivers earlier this month from the Giants, will remain with the Tigers as extra organizational depth.

With Javier Baez returning from bereavement leave on Friday, the Tigers needed to clear a spot on the active roster and Díaz was unfortunately the odd-man out. He went 0-for-5 with a pair of strikeouts during his brief time with the big league club.

Díaz returns to the majors after Javier Báez was placed on the bereavement list. The former top prospect appeared in six games with the Giants this season and will give the Tigers a much-needed bat off the bench.
