White Sox released OF Gorkys Hernandez.
Hernandez, 32, was signed to a minor league contract in February by the White Sox without an invitation to big league camp. The 32-year-old hit just .143/.218/.245 with a 14/5 K/BB ratio in 57 plate appearances for the Red Sox in 2019.
Hernandez signed a minor-league deal which does not include an invitation to big-league camp with the White Sox on Tuesday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
The 32-year-old has parts of six big-league seasons under his belt, hitting an unimpressive .230/.292/.351. He appeared in 20 games for Boston last season and did even worse, hitting .143/.218/.245.
Hernandez elected free agency Monday rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Pawtucket, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.
Hernandez had been outrighted by the Red Sox on Friday, but his veteran status meant he was eligible to refuse the assignment. The 32-year-old is unlikely to be a hot commodity this offseason due to his career .230/.292/.351 slash line.
Hernandez was outrighted to Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports.
The Red Sox have cleared a spot on the 40-man roster by outrighting Hernandez to Triple-A. He appeared in 20 big-league contests a season ago, hitting .143 with two RBI and a stolen base.
