Francisco Rodriguez recently told Venezuelan journalist Guillermo Arcay that he is still hoping to return to the major leagues.
“That is the goal,” said Rodriguez, who is 38 years old and hasn't appeared in a game at the MLB level since June 2017. "In spite of the fact that I’m seen as being advanced in age, that is the goal. The injuries and the ups and downs have slowed me down. But I have the conviction, the hunger and I am completely sure I can accomplish it." K-Rod currently ranks fourth on the all-time saves leaderboard with 437 -- behind only Mariano Rivera (652), Trevor Hoffman (601), and Lee Smith (478) -- but it would be downright shocking at this point to see him climb any further up that list. Even if he reaches the majors again, it would likely be in a low-leverage role.
Rodriguez agreed to a contract with the Acereros de Monclova in Mexico, Robert Murray of The Athletic reports.
Rodriguez will head to Mexico to play ball, though he still has the desire to return to Major League Baseball before he calls it a career. If he's able to impress in Mexico, there's certainly a chance he could draw interest from big-league teams.
Rodriguez has expressed a desire to return to Major League Baseball next season, Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press reports.
Rodriguez spent this past year in the Atlantic League with the Long Island Ducks after pitching for the Tigers in 2017. Across 28 relief appearances with Detroit that season, he logged a disastrous 7.82 ERA and 1.66 WHIP with 23 strikeouts in 25.1 innings. The soon-to-be 37-year-old could very well have a few more strikeouts up his sleeve, but a return to a high-leverage spot in the majors seems unlikely at this point. Rodriguez was unable to earn a spot on the Phillies' Opening Day roster last year after signing a minor-league deal with the club.
Rodriguez inked a deal with the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League on Sunday, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports.
Rodriguez was granted his release from the Phillies on March 24, and he's now set to play in an independent league. It seems unlikely that the 36-year-old will make a return to Major League Baseball after he was unable to make Philadelphia's big-league roster ahead of the 2018 season.
