Francisco Peña has signed a contract with the CTBC Brothers of Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League.
Peña last appeared in the majors with the Cardinals back in 2018. The 32-year-old backstop spent the entire 2021 campaign at Triple-A Las Vegas in the Athletics' minor-league system, hitting .250/.322/.459 with 23 round-trippers across 447 plate appearances in 105 games.
Francisco Pena had a nice night at the dish in Friday's 11-0 Cactus League stomping of the Dodgers, going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBI.
The 31-year-old backstop plated a pair of runs with double off of Clayton Kershaw in the second inning that increased the A's early lead to 3-0. He then doubled again leading off the fourth inning and eventually came around to score on an RBI single by Elvis Andrus. Pena has been good in his limited action this spring, hitting .417 (5-for-12) with a homer and five RBI. He provides the A's with plenty of extra depth behind the plate.
Athletics signed C Francisco Pena to a minor league contract.
He'll earn $600,000 if he makes the major league roster. The 31-year-old Pena hasn't appeared in the majors since 2018 with the Cardinals, but he'll give the Athletics some nice veteran depth going into spring training.
